Many modern new homes come with some fine inclusions, from sophisticated fixture & fittings to textures and colour schemes. The trend of feature walls is one of those finishing touches that can be very aesthetically pleasing. It can completely change the dynamic and feel of a room, space or home.
One of the great inceptives to include a featured home is the fact they can be very cost effective, depending on what you are trying to achieve. They also create a sense of individuality from other properties.
What type of feature walls are there?
A feature wall is a wall that adds interest and energy to a room through texture, colour and contrast. Due to their versatility, a feature wall can be utilised anywhere throughout your home and through a wide range of materials.
Painted feature walls
Painted feature walls can be inserted anywhere inside the home. They are very simple and affordable. If you have a steady hand, you may find you are more than capable of doing it yourself too. Common places where you see a painted feature wall is at the bed head end of a master bedroom, along the tv wall in the living area or even in the second living area.
Wallpaper feature walls
Wallpaper feature walls can also be used anywhere inside the home. The difference with this style is that the wallpaper will have a pattern design that can complement certain textures or materials. Some patterns can blend well with wooden or metal surfaces as opposed to a painted feature wall.
Wood panel feature walls
Wood panelling can be very effective. They can be presented in neutral colours, earthy colours or louder palates depending on what you are trying to achieve. They can look very nice to smaller walls as they easily catch your eye. These types of walls are more often seen in an open floor plan or second living room. They also look nice in a home office environment too.
Stone feature walls
Stone feature walls are less commonly used. They can look fantastic in a mid-century home design, but they aren’t often used in more contemporary modern housing. They uniquely add natural materials into your home and can come in many colours.
Tile feature wall
This is probably the most common type of feature wall. They are generally seen in wet areas of a home including the kitchen (splashback), bathrooms (either along the basin and mirrors or the shower) and laundries. Due to its water resistance, tile works best for these wet rooms, providing both an aesthetic and efficient look.
Outdoor feature walls
The trend isn’t just occurring on the inside of the home, it also trending on the outside. It can be very aesthetically pleasing and can a great way to add further privacy from your neighbours. The outdoor area would need to use certain materials that can manage the hot and wet seasons, otherwise they will fade, crack and deteriorate. A stone or tile feature walls would be more commonly used, but certain wooden designs are also popular due to the earthy and natural appearance.
