Cost-effective ways to keep warm this winter. As we have entered our third week of winter, Melbourne is starting to show signs of a cold season ahead. When spending more time at home, we want to stay home and keep warm and comfortable.

When keeping warm at home, our utility bills often increase. In this market insight we share some simple tips on cost-effective ways to keep warm this winter.

  • Don’t overheat your home – Energy.gov.au is a website that provides energy information from a range of Australian Government and state and territory government sources. According to their data, if you use an air conditioner to warm your home, aim to keep the internal temperature between 18°C – 20°C. Apparently every degree you increase your heating, it can add up to 10% on your energy use. Turning it off overnight and when you are away from home is also a good way to reduce your energy bill.
  • Buy a woollen rug – Many modern homes have either timber flooring or tiles in the living spaces, including the kitchen. Rolling out a woolen rug on the floorboards or a tiled floor can help retain the heat under your feet. Warm feet leads to a warmer body. Did you know floors account for approximately 10-20% of heat loss when they aren’t insulated, so rolling out a rug where you often spend more time in during the day will help immensely. Obviously the rug will cost you, but if well maintained, you can easily wash it and store it away in the warmer months of the year. It should last quite a number of years.
  • Purchase slippers or winter socks – Similar to our suggestion with a woolen rug, keeping your feet warm is a great way to stay warm. You can buy a variety of slippers, socks and other home footwear to keep you cozy.
  • Door snakes – A very cheaper inclusion for you home. You place them against the bottom of your doors to stop the cool air from coming through and also stops the warmer air from running away!
  • Window sealing: Sticky foam runners are a very cheap solution to seal your windows, particularly for older homes. It also stops the cold air from coming in and stops the warmer air for leaving the house.
