Top things to do in the Melbourne CBD (city)

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2017 Global Liveability Index awarded Melbourne as the world’s top city for seven years running. Healthcare, education and infrastructure are among the most influential reasons. Now currently ranked second, is a place anyone around the world can call home.

Undoubtedly filled with amenities and activities here is a list of the top things to do in Melbourne CBD, but in no particular order:

Melbourne Comedy Festival

The Melbourne Comedy Festival is located on Exhibition Street. An annual event that occurs each April the festival literally taking over the city with an enormous program of stand-up comedy, cabaret, theatre, street performance, film, television, radio and visual arts. This is a ‘not to be missed’ opportunity.

Flinders Street Station

Opening in 1854 it is one of the oldest sites in the city. This historic Flinders Street Station serves the entire Melbourne network and is the busiest station in the state. Its’ prominent dome, arched entrance, tower and clocks is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. Worth a photo any day of the week!

Melbourne International Film Festival

Another widely popular event located in the heart of the Melbourne CBD comes the Melbourne International Film Festival. Held over three weeks it attracts many people including locals and tourists all over the country. The event was founded in 1952 and is one of the oldest film festivals in the world.

Federation Square

Federation Square is home to some of the biggest and most popular indoor and outdoor public events available. Easily assessable by tram or train, hundreds of thousand of people pass this famous part of the city. Many drop by and have lunch, attend workshops, watch the big sporting events on an outdoor cinematic screen or head out after work for drinks. There is something for everyone.

Melbourne Park

Home to the Australian Open it is one of the four international grand slams in the world. Held each January, it has more foot traffic than any other tournament in the country. During the year, Melbourne Park is used regularly to accommodate concerts, corporate events, functions and many different types of sport.

Vue de Monde

Located in the famous Rialto building, once the largest building in the southern hemisphere. An elegant fine dining restaurant, winner of a Michelin star has an incredible menu and amazing city views. If you are looking to be swept of your feet, this is the place!

Melbourne’s GPO

Built in 1861 and formerly the General Post Office for Victoria it’s located on the corner of the Bourke Street Mall and Elizabeth Street. The beautiful architecture was restored in 2012 and is one of  Australia’s heritage listing. Now a widely popular retail shopping gallery with brand-name and restaurants you’ll appreciate the ‘old meets new’ vibe.

Hawker Chan

Another award winning world-class restaurant. A Cantonese cuisine with flavour, presentation and wonderful staff. This menu is quite diverse and the food is fabulous.

SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium

Home to over 10,00 animals from sea creatures, crocodiles and more, this is an exciting world-class interactive experience not to be missed. Lines can be massive on peak days/times, so make the most of a day off during the week. They feature various events throughout the year, school excursions, water diving and much much more. You can easily spend most of the day here.
