Tips for making a room look bigger

If you’re looking to make a room look bigger, we share some great tips to help. The following ideas don’t have to be costly either.

Light colour schemes and tones

Most may already be aware. Light colour schemes are an effective way to make a room look bigger, brighter and sometimes cleaner.

Light colour walls are very reflective. This gives an impression that the room feels more open and spacious. Light colour kitchens also reflect more light into the dining and living areas. Many feel the light colour is calming and more inviting.

Having your wall trim and moldings a lighter color than your walls can trick you to think the walls are further back, making your room look bigger.

Dark colour schemes can look luxurious and sophisticated, but they often absorb light. This can make the eye see the room smaller compared to a light colour scheme.

Increase the natural light

If you can increase the natural light inside your property, it will immediately have your room look bigger. It effectively opens up the area. If you have large windows or sliding doors, having the right window furnishings can achieve both natural light during the day, but add privacy in the evening.

If the outdoor view from inside looks plain or borrowing, investing into some plants can add a calming and relaxing feel.

Not all properties have great natural light. This is particularly the case in older homes. There are other ways to improve lighting. There are many great lighting fixtures that offer a variety of shades and colours. These can also provide the same effect if installed subtly.

Mirrors can enhance light and space

Mirrors can manipulate the depth of a room. The natural light can positively reflect more light onto other walls and areas within the home. Mirrors will enhance the light in areas the sun may not capture as well.

Mirrors can give your room a more open feel while looking quite nice on a wall.

Reduce any clutter

If you have to much clutter, it will appear messy and disorganised. Therefore causing a room to look smaller. It’s likely the biggest reason to cause a room to look small. Look at getting some useful storage compartments to help clean up the smaller items around the home. Also reduce paintings and other contents on walls. These cam make a room appear smaller. A nice painting will add character, but to many will compromise the room size.

You can furnish a room that will catch someone’s attention. A prime furniture in a bedroom is the bed and side drawers. A kitchen will be the island bench top and kitchen appliances. While a dining area will be the dinner table. Try keeping clutter at a minimum so the furniture compliments the room.

Another important approach is keeping floors clear. If you have an entrance full of shoes or a TV cabinet full of ornaments, DVDs and the like, the room will loss it’s spacious feel. In the winter, the floorboards get cold. Many may want a rug to warm our feet. Rugs can also look inviting, but it can cause a room to look smaller. Be cautious of this in advance.

Furnishing the property wisely

Furniture brings a complete new dimension to a home. There still needs to be a fine balance so you do not over populate a room with too much contents. You can purchase multi-function furniture to help reduce it. Having no furniture in a room can also perceive an appearance of a room being smaller than what it really is.

Keeping colour schemes consistent will also help. Perhaps consider keeping larger bulky furniture near walls or use them to split an open floor plan between the kitchen and to living area. This will make a room look bigger. Also be mindful not to block any natural lights with high cupboards, fridges or anything that will fall in front of a window. Some furniture offers some storage, so you should use that wisely to avoid any clutter.
