According to the latest statistics from the Crime Statistics Agency Victoria, we have seen our crime rate fall by about 7.8 percent.

Victoria Police deputy commissioner Shane Patton “Whilst we acknowledge any crime is one crime too many, when you can see these type of results, it’s some validation — it’s some vindication that we are heading in the right direction”.

The most notable criminal activity still remains with motor vehicle theft. The highest overall incidents occurred in the City of Melbourne, while Latrobe, Yarra, Mildura and Greater Shepparton rounded out the top five in Victoria.

However not all crime rate activity has fallen. Unfortunately the reporting of sexual offences continues to increase. Over the course of 2018 its been revealed that its increased by 13.3 per cent. Last year it increased by approximately 16% and has unfortunately continued to increase for 5 consecutive years.

The City of Brimbank makes up 21 suburbs in the western side of Melbourne. It has the highest incident rate for abductions while Hume City, Darebin and Greater Dandenong take the highest recording of motor vehicle theft. Greater Geelong also shows a large number of criminal activity. Consisting of drug cultivation, graffiti and cruelty to animals to name a few.

Other alarming figures coming from the Crime Statistics Agency Victoria:

  • In 2018, there were 21 terrorism offences compared to 2 in 2017
  • Firearms offences have doubled since 2010
